It’s no secret that one of the best tools to keep your skin looking youthful, fresh & healthy is sun protection. Come rain or shine, outside or inside; sun protection is something you need.
Protect Your Skin
We all love to spend more time outdoors enjoying beach days, braais with friends, time in the busy, long hikes, and summer sports. Even if you are super careful and slather on your sunscreen every two hours, the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays can, unfortunately, burn your skin, putting you at higher risk of early skin ageing and developing skin cancers.
UVA protection ensures the deeper layers of your skin are protected from early ageing and wrinkles.
UVB protection stops your skin from burning, and as we all know, sunburn may cause permanent damage over time.
With summer fast approaching, it’s time to relook at our beauty strategies to ensure our skin is shielded and hydrated as we catch the summer rays.
Keeping not only our skin but also our body’s too, it’s best to opt for a clean formula that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals.
Here are some DO's and DON'Ts for sun protection options:
Sun Protective Clothing
Do invest in premium sun-protective headwear is an important and effective option to layer into your sun protection strategy.
A sun hat or sun protective umbrella is a physical barrier between you and the sun, unlike SPF sunscreen, which must be reapplied every couple of hours.
UPF50+ Certified UV Protection means that sun protection clothing products have been tested and verified in a laboratory under strict standards to achieve their UPF50+ rating and offer your skin maximum sun protection.
The UPF50+ rating means the hat will block out 97 - 98% of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays and offer excellent sun protection.
It is hard to tell how protective clothing is by looking at it or holding it up to the light, as our eyes cannot see ultraviolet radiation. A UPF50+ tag or label is the best indicator so you can be confident about the listed level of protection.
Sun Screen Products
A top sunscreen tip for kids and adults is to invest in SPF skin products and look for mineral sunscreens – they create a physical barrier to block UV rays and aren’t absorbed into the body.
DO choose products with these ingredients: Zinc oxide Titanium dioxide
DO NOT choose products with these ingredients: Oxybenzone Octyl methoxycinnamate Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate)
Detox your life
It is as important to know what you’re putting on your body as what you're putting in it.
Summer is a great time to update your skincare routine because the environment affects our skin differently.
